A letter to Mrs Das (The interpreter of Maladies)

Dear Mrs Das,

I know this letter will never reach you, as I do not have your address in America, and you have lost my address, but nonetheless, since I was planning to write you a letter, I shall do so.

Its been six weeks since I drove your family on that tour to the Sun Temple in Konarak. Here is a picture of the temple to refresh your memories:

Honestly I was still half expecting to receive your letter. If you had not lost my address, I would have heard from you right about now.

How is Bobby? I am sure that the little scratch on his leg would have healed by now? Just the other day I had to do an interpreting job for a patient who had been attacked by monkeys as well.

Well that may or may not be him.

It was a challenging job understanding the patient’s Gunjarati, as he was in pain, but I managed to handle this responsibility. I think I am starting to realise why you find my job romantic, Mrs Das.

I am also sorry I could not solve the problem you presented to me while we were at the hills of Udayagiri. Having mentioned that, I have lost my interest in writing this letter that will never reach you.

Normally I would not say this, but since this letter will never reach you, I would like you to say that I was quite fond of you Mrs Das. But after the secret that you told me, I am very much disappointed in you.

I hope that you will one day tell Mr Das about your secret, after all honesty is the best policy.

I must stop now, as I have to prepare for another guided tour tomorrow.

Yours Truly,

Mr. Kapasi
